There's a question that follows many of us through our days. Sometimes it’s quiet, sometimes it shouts, but the question is always the same: ‘Is this the life I'm supposed to be living?’

It's one of the most human questions there is. And the simple truth is that no one but you can answer it. But the equally encouraging truth is that the answer is already inside you, you just need the right tools to uncover it.

Step 1: Get Honest About What You Actually Want

Most of us spend a surprising amount of energy wanting what we ‘think’ we should want — the prestigious job, the picture-perfect relationship, the lifestyle that earns approval. The first step toward your right life is peeling back those layers.

Give this a try: Imagine no one in your life would ever know how you spent your time or what you chose to do. No judgment, no explanation required. What would you do? What would your days look like? The version of you that emerges in that thought experiment is worth listening to.

Journaling, long walks, and honest conversations with people you deeply trust are all powerful tools for this kind of self-excavation. The goal isn't to arrive at a perfect answer immediately, it's to start telling yourself the truth.

Step 2: Distinguish Between Values and Preferences

Not everything that matters to you deserves equal weight. There's a difference between your core values — the non-negotiables that define who you are — and your preferences, which are nice to have but flexible.

For example, you might value deep connection, creative expression, and financial security at the core level. But whether you express that creativity through painting or writing, or whether that security comes from a salary or freelance work, is a matter of preference.

When you know your values, decision-making becomes much clearer. The right life is one aligned with your values, not necessarily one that checks every preference box.

Step 3: Pay Attention to Your Energy

Your body and emotions are telling you something constantly, but most of us just aren't listening. Think about the activities, environments, and relationships in your life and ask: which ones leave you feeling energized, and which ones drain you?

This isn't about avoiding discomfort entirely. Growth is often uncomfortable. But there's a meaningful difference between the tiredness that follows meaningful hard work and the emptiness that follows work that doesn't matter to you. Learn to tell the difference.

Step 4: Experiment Before You Commit

You don't have to overhaul your entire life to figure out what's right for you. In fact, big dramatic gestures are often less effective than small, intentional experiments. Try the side project. Take the class. Spend a weekend doing the thing you've been curious about. Let your life become a series of honest experiments before you commit to a new direction.

The goal is to gather real data about what resonates, not to follow a theory of who you might become.

Step 5: Consider the Long Game

It's easy to focus on what feels good right now. But the right life is one you can sustain and also grow into. Ask yourself: In 10 or 20 years, what will I regret not having tried? What kind of person do I want to look back and see that I became? These questions help you separate the momentarily appealing from the genuinely meaningful.

A Final Word

Get really honest about who you are, what you want, and what brings you energy. Noticing when these things align is the best way we know to become the person you want to be and live the life that’s meant for you. It’s not a quick fix, it may take a little trial and error, but believe us when we say, it’s well worth the effort.
